Al-Qa'ida in Iraq leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi
announcing the merger with al-Nusra on Tuesday, said in an audio message:
"It is time to announce to the Levantine people and the whole world that
Jabhat al-Nusra is merely an extension and part of the Islamic State of
Iraq."
The following day al-Nusra's
leader, Abu Mohammed al-Jawlani, pledged allegiance to al Qa'ida in Iraq ,
but added his group had not been consulted prior to al-Baghadi's statement.
